Amanda was first elected to the enjoyable role of Councillor for Singleton South Ward in May 2007. Many constituents have been helped with their varied problems: ensuring inspirational children had their potentials enhanced at the right secondary schools; planning concerns; getting small items sorted so the environment was not spoilt. Jill of all trades, but mistress of none! Amanda has also been involved in many aspects of Singleton life: school governor, allotments society secretary, environmental campaigner, as well as helping other groups if they needed it. A great believer in team work, Amanda was delighted to be co-opted onto Great Chart with Singleton Parish Council shortly after her election. Though new to Parish Councils, Amanda soon got stuck in. Through the Parish Council she has confronted developers over their ill-thought planning scheme for the land opposite the John Wesley School. She is part of the team developing Singleton Park and looks forward to it opening.
Amanda is involved with disability campaigning groups including Ashford Access and the Kent Association for the Blind. With the KAB, she is developing plans concerning training local government staff to be more visually impaired aware.
Amanda regularly walks round Singleton which helps her keep on top of any problems. Residents can stop her and discuss their concerns. Look out for the hat! It was while walking round Singleton Lake that she noticed that the Gormley boulders had disappeared. She is determined to get them back!
For the future, Amanda is working towards starting a Neighbourhood Youth Forum, as the “voice of tomorrow” should be heard today. She will work with all the Chilmington Green stakeholders to ensure that, when the development occurs, the best solution is found for all. And, on a personal note, she has ambitions to be Mayor of Ashford!
