The last thing I would say is that you can achieve a lot of things in politics. You can get a lot of things done. And that in the end, the public service, the national interest - that is what it’s all about. Nothing is really impossible if you put your mind to it.
Since I last wrote this column two weeks ago the political wheel has turned faster than I can ever remember. The British people have voted to leave the EU, the Prime Minister has resigned, and the pound has lost 15 per cent of its value.
