I’m Graham Galpin your Conservative Candidate for Ashford East in the Kent County Council Election on Thursday May 6th. Helena and I have lived in an old part of Ashford at Barrow Hill for 37 years; our children went to the local schools and both now live in the Ashford East Division.
As a Borough Councillor in Ashford town for eight years and a Cabinet Member for six years I managed to get things moving with the so-called “Big 8” project. I know how to get to the right people to act on our behalf. Bringing a fresh pair of eyes and a new vitality I will work with Borough councillors, the County Council officers and key organisations to get things moving on your behalf.
I’m passionate about Ashford and our County Kent. We have great places to live and work in Ashford East and in the Borough and we have a history of success and moving with the times. We have been a military town, a railway town, a market town and now we are a hybrid, including the best of each aspect. We have gone from strength to strength economically and COVID will be a hiatus not a full stop.
We do need more homes for our children, but these must be thoughtful developments taking the geography of our area into account and the everyone’s desire to build back better. We need to protect our green spaces and reduce the risk of flooding on paths in the flood plain. I will make sure that longstanding specific flood risks such as the subway near Asda find a lasting solution.
Roads are a County Council issue and there is a new £11m fund to get on top of potholes, with comprehensive resurfacing in places including Hythe Road. You as residents know where potholes are and can report them online or tell me and I can act on your behalf.
We know that vehicles drive too quickly on Hythe Road. In the morning and evening young people are on their way to school. The young and older residents must be protected from excessive and dangerous speeding. I will strive to extend the 20mph limit to make Hythe Road safer. I successfully achieved this for residents in Essella Road.
I have been informed by residents that thoughtless parking across the Ashford East Division remains an every day annoyance. It is possible to make improvements and I will work with the Borough Councillors to make it happen.
Although overnight lorry parking in and around Church Road is already forbidden it needs to be enforced. I will work with KCC and ABC to ensure that enforcement works.
The problem of anti-social behaviour and minor thefts are troubling for residents. To combat this, we need a “Public Places Protection Order” across the Division and together with SwanCC, Borough Councillors and Kent Police we can achieve this.
I am appalled at suggestions that the A&E Department and other key services may be relocated from William Harvey Hospital to Canterbury. I am already fighting to retain an enhanced hospital service to our town and have written to the Kentish Express encouraging people to take part in the consultation. If we don’t get our voices heard we can’t complain if things go wrong.
