Signalised pedestrian crossing proposed for A28 in Tenterden

A consultation has been launched for a proposed new signalised pedestrian crossing on the A28 Ashford Road, Tenterden.

The scheme, outside the Spires assisted living residential homes, would see the traffic island crossing removed, replacing it with a Puffin crossing.

This would include dropped kerbs and red tactile paving to benefit disabled pedestrians, those using wheelchairs, and those with buggies or prams.

Puffin crossings have sensors attached to the signal pole, instead of a timer. These sensors can detect whether any pedestrians are on the crossing and ensure that the lights for traffic do not change until all pedestrians have finished crossing the road.

The new crossing would be about 30 metres north of the current traffic island and the existing hedge which screens the pavement and Spires from the road will need to be removed for adequate sight lines for both pedestrians and motorists.

KCC says it will replace the area where the hedge is currently located with a new paved footway area to improve space for pedestrians when accessing the new crossing.
